The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity will discuss the new Earned Sick Act rule for small businesses with employees in Michigan. The Michigan Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA) went into effect on February 21, 2025, mandating that all Michigan employers including small business employers provide paid sick leave to their employees. This includes accrual of 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, with a cap on usage at 72 hours annually for larger businesses, and 40 hours for small businesses (defined as employers with 10 or fewer employees).
