This is a meeting of the Royal Oak Public Library Film Club. We meet each month to discuss a movie on Kanopy that we have watched on our own before the discussion. There are not that many venues anymore that show independent films, and even less opportunity to discuss films. But there are so many good movies out there that demand our active engagement. This club is a chance to really take film seriously, to watch it passionately and critically, and discuss it with fellow film enthusiasts.
Our movie for December is The Last Laugh, which can be watched here.
One of the crowning achievements of the German expressionist movement, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s The Last Laugh stars Emil Jannings as an aging doorman whose happiness crumbles when he is relieved of the duties and uniform which had for years been the foundation of his happiness and pride.
Through Jannings’s colossal performance, THE LAST LAUGH becomes more than the plight of a single doorman, but a mournful dramatization of the frustration and anguish of the universal working class.
